Simchat Torah - שמחת תורה

10/17/2014 7:00 PM

Is a celebration marking the conclusion of the annual cycle of public Torah readings, and the beginning of a new cycle.

In Israel, Simchat Torah is celebrated with Shemini Atzeret as a 1 day festival instead of 2 like throughout the Jewish World. The Simchat Torah festivities begin with the evening service. All the synagogue's Torah scrolls are removed from the ark and are carried around the sanctuary.

Throughout Israel, the dancing and singing with the Torah continues and overflows from the synagogue onto the streets.
