Our Civic Responsibility as Jews offers Many Channels for Action.
Our civic responsibility is expressed when we vote, and it is expressed in every public declaration of support for Israel.
It is expressed at rallies, on social media, in community council meetings and education board committees.
And it is demonstrated through our actions, our words, our knowledge of history and its relevance to our activism today. How we speak with our children, how we teach and open our hearts to the depth of what is taking place during this upheaval of human existence.
BUT IF OUR VOICES ARE DROWNED OUT, DO OUR DECLARATIONS MATTER?
Throughout history, people have been making declarations about the Jews. For better or for worse, Jews make the news… From Cyrus to Napoleon, Herzl to Balfour, Ben Gurion to Trump - leaders voicing their support for the Jewish dream of freedom and our ancestral fulfillment of our destiny has been present in nearly every generation.
Sadly - in the same eras, we have heard the demonization declarations that we are hearing again today… Zionism is Racism, Jews are the threat and to blame for the ills of the world... the lies are almost too powerful for many common people to cope with. That is why it is incumbent upon us to know our history well enough to feel confident and proud of the ways that even the common individual can be a part of fighting the waves of lies through ownership of historical truth.
The demonization of Israel is so pervasive and socially acceptable that even supposedly unbiased resource materials, like Wikipedia, are corrupted by the antisemitic agenda. What more can we do to join the fight against the propagandized distortions?
Balfour’s initiative to ensure the Jewish nation was rightfully reborn in the biblical homeland was a first step. Then 30 years later, after 4 affirmations in international law, on November 29, the United Nations made a declaration of support, establishing the international recognition of the Land of Israel as the Jewish ancestral homeland. The vote for the partition plan to divide the land into one Jewish and one Arab state was met with acceptance by the Jews, willing to compromise anything for the sake of peace... the eternal dilemma we are facing even today as the world has launched upon the Jewish nation another war for our survival - both in the land and in communities around the world.
Did the declaration of Jewish rights matter? Are the important efforts taking place today to make sure those rights are enshrined in all civic law and public awareness making a difference? And how do we contend with continued declarations against Israel that are based on outright lies, and those that are attempting to reward the murder of Jews with the recognition of a terrorist state?
We believed that the world would finally see, after October 7, the encampments and the endless assaults, how essential Israel is to the future of Jewish existence. While we face increased threats in every forum, we know that history has led us to this point, and that we all bear responsibility in how we carry onward with hope and persistence.
November 30 we honored Jewish Refugee Day to commemorate the hundreds of thousands displaced from their homes during the many expulsions from Arab and European lands throughout history. And on Sigd, November 28, we remembered the ancient tradition of the Ethiopian Jews, descendants of our ancient tribes that they carried throughout their years of exile.
AND WHAT ABOUT NOW? What about the hostages who have yet to return to their families? What about the Israeli families who are refugees from their homes in the northern and southern communities? Unable to return home, no humanitarian aid provided - only that which is provided by the state and the miraculous work of the local grassroots efforts like our therapeutic mosaics that are doing all we can to make a difference.
Help us help these aching souls.
Consider donating to a mosaics craft to be gifted to a community in need this Chanukah. Or twinning with your community or group. The families and their children will thank you for bringing new light into their lives.
The impact of these programs is so personal and meaningful, and YOU can make a tangible impact on their lives and sustaining their hopes for the future.
