Has Human Empathy Waned Against the Jews?
When we want to recap the news, who knows where to begin. So many headlines, so much confusion as we ask ourselves again and again - how is this possibly happening? And after all our years of reciting "Never Again."
Now we witness what again means - when a child is grabbed from his father's hand, when a student is strangled in a public place, when death chants are acceptable by police, when a young rabbi can be kidnapped and murdered even in the UAE where Abrahamic brotherhood finally began to take shape. Even in that oasis, terror has infiltrated - and its tentacles are growing.
So, too, are the number of missiles, the fallen soldiers, the days our hostages remain in hell growing while the world ignores their fate.
In last week's virtual program, Facing the Broken Glass, we explored the connection between the current and the past, methods of coping and channels for action. We have seen reports of new styles of attacks that people should be more aware of - those infiltrating your work spaces without your being aware, or of unspoken verbal attacks that people do not know how to deal with. And yet each passing day another series of attacks demand our attention, all while human empathy for Jews is waning.
Are we winning with our petitions and rallies and gala balls and public speeches? Can liking and signing stop the the endless media wars against Israel, on top of every other front we are fighting? Have we helped people see Jews and Israel as real living breathing entities that embody the spirit of God and hope?
Some relish in the small acts of kindness or messages of support they receive. Others dwell in the mire of the hatred, questioning what is there to do when the algorithms are against us? The frontal war against Jewhatred is ongoing, and so, too, must be our battle for deserved compassion for an ancient people seeking nothing other than peace in our ancestral and Biblical homeland.
While Americans will gather around their Thanksgiving tables, many will be questioning how to reflect on the intensity of the things we are grateful for. It's a perfect time - just like on Shabbat - to do something extra to show your gratitude for Israel and her defense of Jewish rights everywhere.
