Hatikva, which means hope in Hebrew, is the national anthem of Israel. The letter of the poem was written in the year 1878 by Naftali Herz for the foundation of Petach Tikva, one of the first Jewish settlements in the Palestine of the Ottoman Empire.

In 1897, during the first Zionist congress, it became the anthem of Zionism and was proclaimed Israel's national anthem in 1948, the year of the creation of the State of Israel.
