The first Zionist Congress was convened by Theodor Herzl, the founder of the modern Zionist Movement, and held in Basel, Switzerland from August 29-31,1897.

This gathering formally launched the Zionist movement, leading to the creation of the State of Israel. Today Zionism continues to connect Jews worldwide with our homeland as we continue to support, develop and promote Israel.

To commemorate the 120th anniversary of modern Zionism, the American Zionist Movement is holding a ceremony at the Theodor Herzl Memorial in Freedom Square Park (Queens NYC). Join with Jewish leadership, government officials, the Consulate of Israel. and other community organizations, as we gather to honor this special day in our history.

As Hatikvah was adopted as the anthem of the Zionist Congress, we will sing it together as we celebrate this historic occasion and renew our commitment to Zionism.
