Jewish Heroes that connect us to the Land and Our History
Mattityahu and his sons were of the Hashmonaim family of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Levi. They took upon themselves the name MaCcaBeE - the abbreviation for Mi Camocha Ba’aylim Adonai - after the Assyrians desecrated the Temple and wanted the Jewish people to bow to their gods.
The Maccabees were hiding in caves in the area of Modi’in, Israel determined to maintain their way of life. The Maccabees recognized that the only way to protect and hold onto their Jewish values and their lifestyle was to enter into battle against the Seleucid Greeks.
The Maccabee soldiers used shields to defend themselves in the fight against the Assyrian Greeks.
